Driving Classes
To be Judged on Thursday, 13th May in the BHS Frogmore Arena
- Class 36 Driving for the Disabled
- For single ponies or donkeys. Open to any vehicle specifically built for a disabled person, to be driven by an ambulant or non-ambulant whip. No lamps.
- The class will be divided into two sections.

- Section A - Driving
- Competitors will be judged on the cleanliness of the harness, vehicle and pony and driving. All competitors will be required to do a brief show to demonstrate their driving ability.
- Prizes: £50; £40; £30; £20; £10.
- All competitors will receive a rosette.
- Section B - Obstacle Driving
- An obstacle course of cones to be judged under Table A with an optimum time.
- The winner will be the competitor with the least penalties closest to the optimum time. Subsequent placings will be in order of those placed closest to the optimum time. The optimum times will be declared by the judge prior to the start of the competition.
- 5 penalties will be awarded for each cone knocked down. The course to be completed at the trot, a break of pace will be regarded as a disobedience. 5 penalties awarded for first disobedience, 10 for second and subsequent disobediences.
- No Entry Fee.
- CHALLENGE TROPHY, presented by W Lucas Esq, to the winner of Section B.
- Prizes: £50; £40; £30; £20; £10.
To be Judges on Friday, 14th May
- Class 58 Coaching Marathon
- Teams of four horses, to be driven to a Coach carrying not less than
six persons, driver, servants and representatives of the
show included. Coaches will assemble in the Castle Arena
at 12.20p.m. after which they will depart for a drive of
approximately 9 miles and return to the Castle Arena for
final judging at approximately 2.00 p.m.
- No Entry Fee.

- CHALLENGE CUP, presented by Mrs Robert Kaye to the Coaching Club in memory of Mr Robert Kaye.
- Section B Road Coaches
- CHALLENGE CUP, presented by the late L C Lamerton Esq.
- Section C Regimental Coaches
- Prizes in each Section: £100; £75; £50; £40; £40; £40; £40; £40; £40; £40.
- The 1st and 2nd prize-winners in each section will compete for the CHALLENGE CUP, presented by the late Mrs C M Woodbridge.
- THE WILLIAM H MOORE CHALLENGE CUP, kindly loaned by The Coaching Club.
- RESERVE: THE CLAUD MALDEN TROPHY, presented by the late Mrs Claud Malden.
- A Special Prize of £25 will be awarded for the best performance on the Coach Horn by Guards of Coaches.
- The Best Turned Out Coach Award (salver and £250), kindly presented by Mr Jack Pemberton, for the competitor with the best overall turnout, taking into account horses, harness, coach, appointments including appropriate dress for driver and grooms (guard).
To be Judged on Sunday, 16th May
- Class 133 The Laurent Perrier Meet of the
British Driving Society
- There will be a show drive of approximately three and a half miles and
all exhibitors will receive a commemorative rosette. Collect
in the Copper Horse Arena at 2.10p.m. and depart for drive.
Return to Castle Arena for Presentation of Awards at approximately
4.20p.m.
- The essence of this class is the word "elegance" and the winner will be the turnout, which, in the opinion of the Judge, presents the most elegant effect. Attention may well be paid to drivers' and passengers' personal costume but fancy dress or period costume is definitely barred. The whole object of the class is to establish which turnout presents the most pleasing picture and normal judging criteria does not apply. It is judged from a distance and vehicles are not closely inspected.
- A private driving vehicle is a carriage that is designed and manufactured to resemble, as faithfully as possible, a vehicle built to the design of a carriage builder before the 20th century, in the style and methods of those times. Its construction may, however, include modern materials, but its overall appearance must reflect the original styling and profile, including leaf springing. Carriage lamps should be carried. Metal wheels, disc brakes, pneumatic tyred vehicles, show wagons and trade vehicles are barred.
- Entries forward on the day may be refused if, in the opinion of the BDS Steward appointed, turnouts are unsafe or unsuitable to proceed on the drive, or carriages are not of a traditional type. Whips should be carried, passengers must wear hats and gloves and use driving aprons or knee rugs, passengers who join the drive outside the collecting ring must also abide by the conditions regarding hats and gloves. Junior whips must be accompanied by an adult.
- All horses / ponies must be 4 years old or over.
- Entry Fee: £32.
